District 36 and Basic NYC present Jeff Mills / Radio presents Terrence Dixon, Oliver Ho

I arrived at District 36 with my techno stomping boots, armed and ready to take pictures and video for TGGR’s ustream channel (unfortunately the ustream attempt was not successful). When I walked in Sleepy & Boo were just finishing up and Jeff was getting ready in the background. As the music faded, Jeff wooed the dancefloor with his classic spacey ambient intro. Only the purest techno sounds came from those speakers for a solid 4 hours, blasting through the system at District 36 NYC. Jeff made sure the sounds that came from the speakers were crisp and clear, it was an amazingly technical set with one hand on the 909 and the other directing the discs as he keeps all the levels raised. This man is one of the most amazing DJ’s that I have ever seen and he has never disappointed. He is so graceful and the mixes are seamless as he is constantly moving through the grooves.

Keep an eye out for Jeff Mills’ next album The Power! on Limited Released March 15, 2011

After getting down to some pure detroit techno…

I decided to check out the after party for some more techno fun at Radio presents Terrence Dixon, Oliver Ho.  I walked in to Oliver Ho playing “lay you on uh huh, aaaah aahh aahh, yeah” using ableton and evolution for his set. I caught the last hour of Ho’s awesome set and  I wish I could have been there sooner. As Oliver Ho played his last track, Terrence Dixon was cueing up his first record. He opened with that classic detroit house sound and came in with “I’m drrawn to you like a moth drawn to a flame, awe girl i can’t resist you… do it for me, i’ll do it for you.” Dixon slammed those records around like they were his bitch. Great track selection the crowd in that place was having every minute of it!

Each venue that the Radio parties are thrown are awesome and unique. This one was a theatre of sort, with a dance stage (rather than floor). The dj booth was much not to be desired, a wood platform that seemed to work well until the records were being played and a simple step too heavy, or a slight bump around the platform sent the needle bouncing.

A very special thanks to Sleepy & Boo, Jeff Mills, Lenny Posso and the Radio Crew, Terrence Dixon, Oliver Ho and all the dancefloor bandits that came to get down! I look forward to our next adventure on the dancefloor!! Wooooo!!!

This song…

Mark Henning – Collider

It’s gonna be that kind of weekend. This song just about sums it up. Dance, dance, dance.

(We’ll be posting reviews on several very special events this weekend. Stay tuned for something new!)

Need minimal? Need techno? Of course you do!

It’s been 1 1/2 years since I’ve released a mix.  I’m ashamed, excited and already stoked to make another (thinking deep dirty dark and disgusting techno) I’m sure you’ll love it and I promise I won’t ever leave you hanging again. Thanks for the demands :) <3 Julia

20 Years Planet E with Carl Craig, Derrick May, Paul Woolford, Jody Wisternoff at District 36

20 Years Planet E with Carl Craig, Derrick May, Paul Woolford at District 36 with Sleepy and Boo (Basic NYC)

Friday, February 18, 2011

As soon as we walked into the elegant District 36, we were blessed by the pumping techno sounds of the amazing Carl Craig. We cut a rug when we heard him drop Onsunlade Pres. Nadira Shakoor Pride – (Johnny D. Remix)

About halfway through his set he dropped a SICK acid house track that blew our minds, which we fully expected from this Detroit legend. We worked our way up to the VIP lounge, located on the 2nd floor of the mid level bar. We were ecstatic to stand directly behind the DJ booth with a birds eye view of equipment,  DJs, crew and the dance floor. Carl was throwing down a digital set fully using the four internal decks of Traktor Scratch Pro, N.I.’s Kontrol X1 and a few other tricks up his sleeve.

When Derrick May joined the decks, the two entered into a filthy, bass driven tag team set. Techno was flying, all the levels were red lined and people were eating it up.  Playing on Pioneer CDJ 2000′sDJM 1000 and other equipment we couldn’t see well enough to identify, Derrick was mixing it with that “Oh so classic” Detroit sound that we were begging for. He smoked the place up with his usual mixing style, dropping plumped bass while cutting the EQ’s right and left forcing us to dance.  I say “us” because unfortunately, the lack of dancers was extremely obvious. At one point, Derrick turned down all the music, leaned down to the PACKED but laid back dance floor yelling, “HELLOOOO!!!” It started to wake everyone up and the remainder of the night seemed to progress nicely. Mr. May, if you’re reading this…we were your dancers! We danced absolute non-stop for a little over 4 hours straight.

At the end of the night, Derrick teased us with ending his set, three times. Dropping a track, then another, then another until finally letting us go home, wet, exhausted from dancing and somehow still wanting more.

We like what you do Sleepy & Boo (Basic NYC). Great booking! Great show!

P.S. Unfortunately we left our real camera behind so the only pics we have were from a phone cam. Either way, you can enjoy the few we were able to catch here.

Verboten presents Three, Tanner Ross and Taimur Agha at Thor (LES,NYC)

Verboten presents Three, Tanner Ross and Taimur Agha at Thor (LES,NYC) Sunday February 13, 2011

DJ Three rocking us proper

We arrived at the Hotel on Rivingtons, Thor at 4:55pm, just in time to make the guest list cut off. The bouncers were happy, the woman at the door taking names was inviting and sweet and we were ready to get down. When we first walked in, we immediately noticed the fantastic downbeat jams coming from the dj booth. Tanner Ross (Motherbird Agency) was gracing the place with some recognizable and some not so recognizable tracks. Courtney and I ended up ooohhing and aaaaahhhing over most of what he delivered. Soon after he wooed us to the dance floor and our 7 hour dance journey began.

Things really progressed as the night carried on and then Three (Hallucination Limited) took over the decks. He threw down a deep bass driven, sometimes melodic, sometimes disco, sometimes downright dirty set and we LOVED every minute of it. (and I’m not just saying that because he’s part of our Tampa family, we mean it!). After a bangin three (hehehe) hour set, Taimur Agha (Blk|market Membership) joined on and they continued a fantastic techy and uber dance worthy tag set for the remainder of the evening.  I’m pretty sure we burned holes in the dance floor. Thank you Verboten, we love you Chris Milo and special thanks to the bouncers for being so friendly and just all around awesome and the bartenders for being so sweet and attentive (even though we weren’t drinking alcohol).

See you on the dance floor.
