DJ Courtney K
Do you have a question for Courtney K?
Ask her in the comments area and she’ll answer!
Q: What’s your story?
A: I was born in Ft. Myers, Florida. A small town on the SW coast of FL, known for retirement and fishing. I learned about the electronic dance music culture there. From there I moved to Gainesville, where I did most of my growing up. I found a home with electronic dance music scene, dancing many nights into the mornings at Simons club.
Q: Where was the first place you DJ’d?
A: I was working at the legendary club, Simons and it’s equally fabulous sister lounge Soulhouse (well known for it’s intimate vibe and always great music). On an off season night, during a holiday, I asked my bar manager if I could play some records – he said yes! Little did I know, the proprietor of a different bar in town was there, heard my tunes, then tracked me down a few weeks later and asked me to play regularly. After that, “Ladies Run The Bar” at The Speakeasy began every Monday. I celebrated 10 years in September 2009.
Q: Tell the world something almost no one knows about you.
A: Well, anyone who knows me best knows this…I have a minor addiction to smiley faces. And for the record, smileys don’t have noses. They just don’t.
Q: What’s your favorite thing about being a dj?
A: Being a part of a worldwide network of talented people that inspire me and give me passion.
Q: Who do you think is the next hottest thing in EDM?
A: I’ve really been digging this influx of deep groovy techno rhythms.. I think the broken slowed down beats of trip hop mixed with that new techno sound like you hear from Nicolas Jaar, Damian Lazerus, Maya Jane Coles and many others that have been catching on to this slowed down sexy groove.
Q: How big is your vinyl collection?
A: My collection sits around 3,000 being all the lovers in my life and a few hundred that I now use for samples and have collected to make art.
Q: What equipment do you play on now?
A: I still play on my Technic SL-1200M3D‘s with an Allen and Heath Xone 62 mixer. I have converted some of my vinyl and use Serato ScratchLIVE. I still incorporate vinyl records into my set and now that I live near an actual brick and mortar record store (Thanks Halcyon!), it’s easier to catch the new hot press.
Q: What do you play in the club?
A: I rock tech house and techno in the Club or deep and sultry in the Lounge, depending on the night. It’s all about what the crowd wants.
Q: What advice would you give to up and coming DJ’s?
A: My advice is to learn about your equipment (all of it!). Prepare yourself, be ready for everything. Also, you are on stage, this is an EVENT, feeeel it!! Show it!!! Make them DANCE!!!
